Mark Binder began writing Tales of Chelm as the editor of The Rhode Island Jewish Herald. The story goes that on a busy Wednesday morning, one of the feature articles for the newspaper still hadn't arrived. So, he wrote a story. After that, it became a bit of a habit...

Since then, he has written more than 100 Tales of Chelm for holidays from Rosh Hashanah to Chanukah to Passover. He's written wedding stories, bar and bat mitzvah stories, and even a story called "The Chelm Golem." These stories have been published in Jewish newspapers and magazines throughout the United States and in Canada.

His novel, The Brothers Schlemiel was serialized weekly in print for two years, and was published in 2008 in an illustrated hardback edition from JPS. Mark's most recent story collection, A Hanukkah Present, was named as a finalist/runner-up for the National Jewish Book Award for Family Literature. More than 200 of his stories for young and old have been published in magazines, anthologized in books, and used on standardized tests. His Bed Time Story Book collection is a multigenerational masterpiece that has just been reissued in an edition perfect for young children and families. His collection It Ate My Sister (and other family stories) is billed as the 100% true autobiography of a professional liar.

He is currently working on a new serial called "The Council of Wise Women"

His latest Chelm collection, Matzah Mishugas, is due out in January, 2010.

Mr. Binder is a full-time a storyteller. He regularly performs at libraries, synagogues, community centers and schools.

He is also a trained actor, a graduate of the Trinity Rep Conservatory, and has studied Decroux Mime Technique with the Adaptors Movement Theater and Storytelling with Spalding Gray. He holds a third-degree black belt in Aikido, but promises not to throw anybody across the room.

Mark also has way too many biographies of himself tailored to meet a specific group.
